The SDGs Spread from Cultivation of Cotton in Fallow Rice Fields

The decrease in the number of farmers and the aging of the farming population is one of the major social problems in Japan. As a result, the fallow rice fields is increasing. If fallow fields are left unattended, weeds and bushes will grow and their roots will penetrate the bottom of the rice fields, causing them to lose functionality. Once this happens, it takes a great deal of time and effort to restore the rice fields to rice-producing conditions.

In 2009, a project was started in Koryo-cho, Nara Prefecture, to plant cotton in fallow rice fields in order to protect them. This initiative is attracting attention as a new way of agriculture and industry that not only protects rice fields but also creates employment opportunities, contributes to the revitalization of the local economy, and enables traceability of materials (click here to read the article). This year, with the cooperation of Tabio Nara Corporation, which is promoting this project, we have planned an event to experience harvesting cotton balls grown in fallow rice fields. We hope you will take this opportunity to learn how growing cotton in fallow fields contributes to the SDGs.
